Created PurposeBy Dr. Steven D. BagleyI believe each of us is created for a purpose. That purpose is unique and can best be accomplished as we live out who we are, as we learn to be ourselves. If we act out who we think we are rather than, moment by moment being who we are, we are more likely to miss finding personal significance and satisfaction. Our best chance of personally discovering our significance comes when those around us are more interested in knowing us than controlling us. This is an act of faith wrapped in love. They are trusting in the idea that knowing us will enrich their lives more than controlling us to reinforce their personal view of reality. When one is encouraged to be them self, he/she is blessed. But no one is carried to the point of self-acceptance; you must navigate the final steps alone. If one has witnessed others close to them who have accepted BEING over DOING, the last steps may only be covered by a deceptive fog that calls for personal courage to finalize the journey. For others of us who have been pioneers, preceding ahead of those around us, it takes a personal leap of faith. When we acknowledge we were created with purpose, everything changes. We are no longer alone because we didn't create ourselves. We have meaning and value that needs to be explored and developed if we are going to honor our creator and ourselves. We have a destiny in our future that brings motivation and momentum to our behavior. We are on a mission! We have something to live for and to die for if need be. Make no mistake; created purpose is never self-servicing; never ever self-servicing! If you were created on purpose to be yourself and I was also created on purpose to be myself then it follows that our individual purposes are interconnected. I live, in part, to be myself for your benefit. If you try to control my living then I most likely will be tempted to stop being responsible and start reacting to the lack of respect I understand is behind your actions. You lose knowing me and I lose being me. It is probably obvious that this "being rather than doing" change is about moving from external motivations and values to internal directional guidance. This does not mean that a person who is being them self looks on the outer world as less valuable than themselves. What actually occurs is a change in the direction of who is being serviced. An externally driven person uses the world around them to serve their own interests. Internally directed people become servants, holding the interests of others as more important or equal to their own. Those who accept they were created for a purpose and grow in BEING who they were created to be, become the servant/leaders who know their own destiny and contribute to the destiny of others. In summary, you were created for a purpose. Your purpose is woven into the fabric of who you were created to be. To live out your purpose as completely as possible is to be who you are as completely as possible and as often as possible. |
